BREAK-OUT SESSIONS
Check out what could be this century's most promising scientific endeavor. This session will guide you into biology’s newest frontier with clear and approachable explanations. It’ll also hit on the hot buttons of ethics and politics.
(this session is now closed) To the ER, STAT!!!
Before the med students tackle real-life traumas in the ER, they learn their moves via the Virtual ER. This course takes place in the SUMMIT (Stanford University Medical Media & Information Technologies) Lab, where you'll get to try your hand at the Virtual ER and other simulated procedures. This session requires that you read this PDF document before you arrive at Stanford.
As researchers learn more and more about how to predict personality characteristics or future neurological disease, could our brains become open books? And what would happen if new drugs and devices designed to help the ill or injured are also used to boost a person's brain power to the max? During this session, you'll roll up your sleeves and grapple with the legal, ethical and social dilemmas that advances in brain research may pose.
Capturing the essence of human movement is critical to many disciplines, including anthropology, art, computer science and, naturally, medicine. During this session, you'll learn all about the anatomy of movement and how researchers use their knowledge about the way arms and legs move to develop more effective treatment for people with disabilities. The session is based on an actual med school course.
You bet! In the Center for Advanced Pediatric Education — the world’s first dedicated pediatric and obstetric medical simulation center — doctors and nurses learn how to deal with high-risk deliveries, and other medical problems, with no risk to the patient. During this session, you'll get a look at this amazing teaching tool.
To Sleep, Perchance to Dream…But, Why??
How come we spend a third of our lives logging zzzzz’s? And what’s up with dreams? Do all critters sleep? Even fish? One of our leading sleep docs will bring you up to speed on what researchers know about this amazing — and necessary — function.
If you’re a brain it does. In this session you’ll learn about the brain’s role as you examine the real deal — a collection of real brains (human and animal), brain tissue, and preserved slices.
Hollywood loves infectious critters…think: "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," "Outbreak," etc. This session, based on a Stanford undergraduate course, gleans fact from fiction. It looks at both the science behind infectious diseases and their portrayal in the movies.
(this session is now closed) X-Rays…They’re So Yesterday
Up until now, medical personnel have had to rely on two-dimensional images of our 3-D bodies. But wait until you see the images created at the Stanford 3D Medical Imaging Laboratory. If you’re interested in anatomy or computer graphics, this session is a must! You’ll be assigned to a workstation and you’ll see firsthand how these amazing 3-D images are created.
