How We Can Help Faculty, Staff and Students
The Office of Communication & Public Affairs provides in-house news coverage and media-awareness services to the faculty, researchers and staff at no cost. Our science writers, editors and media-relations specialists can help you get the word out about your ongoing work, discoveries, accomplishments or community needs.
The news releases we write and distribute along with the stories we suggest to radio and television reporters cover the gamut from advances in basic and clinical sciences to calls for research volunteers to human-interest stories about the exceptional people here. This information and more is also shared with the Stanford community through the publications we produce:
In addition, our office is contacted daily by media organizations from around the world when outside reporters have heard about Stanford research via our outreach efforts or through other sources. We then connect them to the right people here. The stories generated under such circumstances often favorably increase the profile of the research or researchers at the medical school.
Our staff can:
- Provide advice, support and media training if you are contacted by reporters
- Serve as media liaisons if your work has entered the public eye
- Publicize scientific papers that may generate media attention
- Initiate coverage of important discoveries to emerge from your lab
- Pitch story ideas based on your work to various media outlets
- Publicize your work within the Stanford community
- Help manage and mitigate an emergency or unfavorable press situation
- Make your opinions public by assisting in the creation of newspaper op-ed pieces
- Promote your expertise by positioning you as an expert in your field
- Inform the local community about requests for research volunteers or other needs
- Promote upcoming events or lectures that have a community interest
- Arrange news conferences if warranted
